The rigidity of control  in current SMA architectural applications set the motivation to frame the project's objective as follows:: to develop a passive system using shape memory springs that integrates mechanical user over-rides without completely breaking out of the passive loop using a mechanical binary latch mechanism. This was designed to allow users to over-ride the naturally actuated system according to their preferences.
